Album Review: The Indobox – Adventure Rock
by James on Feb.05, 2010, under Albums, News, Reviews
A three-way marriage.
That’s legal in Massachusetts, right?
Well, that’s exactly what you get out of The Indobox’s Adventure Rock: a three-way marriage of electric, electronic, and acoustic as they switch at will from the passionately organic to the grindingly distorted and onward to the pleasantly & head-bobbing-ly danceable.
That also means there’s no way to single out any one instrumentalist or even vocalist.
Quinn Ferree’s natural drums give way periodically to drum-machine sounds that ramp up and down in the backdrop of tracks like “Reading,” and “Part II.” Guitars provide stabbing rhythms and monolithic chords in the background while bright synth lines decorate a track. At other times, those same guitarists take the front seat, dial on the delay, and swim their way into your ears. The vocal styles and sounds also change throughout the record thanks to multiple singers, making for a further varied experience.

What’s that, you want more tickets? You got it! We’ve got a pair of tickets to give away for a big show this Saturday at Harpers Ferry. Local dance/rock/jam/electronic all-stars The Indobox headline the bill. They’re celebrating the recent release of their latest album, Adventure Rock, which came out in December of ‘09. Their shows promise great light shows, plenty of different singers, extended jams, and a good time all around. The ‘Box will be rocking 2 separate sets too – plenty of jamsanity to be had by all! They’ll be supported by Canadian indie darlings Dinosaur Bones, who have been selling out clubs all throughout our great northern neighbors and are now set to invade the USA. They just released a 7″ on Monday, and are gearing up to jump into the studio as soon as they finish their current tour to finish up a full length. To further sweeten the pot, DJ Sonkin is coming up from Philly to spin, and local artist Iansanity will be painting live all night long!
Sound like a good time? It will be. Want to go to the show? Want to get in for free? Sure you do! Just send an e-mail to bryan@playgroundboston.com with “INDOBONES” in the subject, and you’ll be entered to win! We’ll only be taking entries until Friday morning, so enter now! Winner will be selected Friday afternoon.
CD Baby to donate $1 to Haitian Relief Efforts for Every Album Sold
by Bryan on Jan.26, 2010, under News

The outpouring of support to aid relief efforts in the wake of the earthquake in Haiti has been impressive thus far, but there is always a need for more. Now, thanks to CD Baby, there’s a way to support both the American Red Cross and your local music scene. CD Baby is the world’s largest online independent music retailer, earning independent artists over $100 million based on 5 million album sales over their years of operation. From now through February 7th, the retailer will be donating $1 from every single album sale they make to the American Red Cross to aid in Haiti. In addition, they will be taking that donation out of their commision, so the amount of money artists will make will not be affected by this initiative.
Been meaning to pick up the album from that local band you saw a few months back and have had stuck in your head ever since? Picked up the new CD from one of your favorite bands and now want to check out their back catalog? One of your favorite old local bands broke up and you don’t know where to get their CD since you can’t get it at a show? Heard of a new band from the PGB Tracks of the Week and want to pick up more of their music? What better time than now to go buy your music, when you can help out the artists you love and the people who need you at the same time?! Here’s some local artists from all types of genres that you can find on CD Baby:
