In what might have been the biggest upset of the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble, Spirit Kid was awarded the judges vote on night #1 of the semi-finals, over a VERY talented field. Crowd response was clearly in favor of Sidewalk Driver and Mellow Bravo, and DNFMOMD put on a jaw-dropping angst-ridden set that blew minds throughout TT’s. Still, the judges chose the dark horse on this one – a choice that while surprising, was well deserved. Look for Spirit Kid to perform next Friday, 4/22, at the Rumble Finals alongside Friday’s semi-final winner John Powhida International Airport, wild card selection Old Jack, and special guests The Shods.

No rest for the weary! The day after the Rock & Roll Rumble Semi-Finals conclude, Cambridge is set to be shattered by the release party for the latest album by longtime Boston heavy hitters Roadsaw. They’ve put together a great lineup to help them celebrate, featuring sets by PGB Favorites Gozu, Bow Thayer & Perfect Trainwreck, and Murcielago. It all goes down this Saturday, April 16th, at the Middle East Upstairs.
Check out this new video from Roadsaw for “So Low Down,” the first single off of their upcoming self-titled album. The video was directed by Mike Gill of Circumvision, who has added another well-crafted film to an already impressive resume! As for this vid, you might have seen a few of these actors performing in very different capacities on stage at several clubs around town. Recognize the bar? This type of thing happens all the time down there. Honest.

Congrats to Sidewalk Driver for their victory on the third night of the Preliminary Round of the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble! Ripping solos, more glitter and confetti than a teenage birthday party, and one of the most commanding and captivating voices in the city propelled the band to the winner’s circle over one of the toughest lineups in the entire competition! We’re happy to report Black Thai made the cut as the second Wild Card thanks to a furious, thunderous, clamorous, beardulous set that left the capacity crowd stunned and speechless! Both bands advance to the Semi-Finals happening this Thursday and Friday back at TT’s.

Congrats to Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling for their victory on the fifth night of the Preliminary Round of the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble! Congrats to Mellow Bravo for their victory on the fourth night of the Preliminary Round of the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble! MB overcame amazing sets by the other three bands thanks to fierce onstage charisma, tight musicianship, and a raucous crowd screaming along to every word! Frontman Keith Pierce was a beast both on and off the stage – crowdsurfing while on the guitar, and even playing on the hood of a car parked outside! Gotta love the Acro-Brats ending the night too by inviting half the crowd onto the stage to sing along to their final song. (and for the Pills & Smoke cover too!)

In a city with a very limited selection of good reggae bands, it’s good to see Doctor Doom Orchestra rise up from the ashes of the Doctors of Flight and keep this reggae rock style going! We knew our TOTW was gonna come from this EP as soon as it hit our desk, but wow was it tough to pick a favorite off of it! Immediately after the first listen, 3 tracks in particular jumped out at us – “Ride Out,” “Badlands,” and “Deep In The Green.” We highly recommend checking them out for yourself – we’ll give you this taste, but if you want more you’ll have to head on over to DDO country! The album is set for worldwide release on Friday, April 15th, head over to the DDO website to find out how to pick up a copy for yourself!
… Or if you’d rather pick up Doctor Doom Orchestra‘s new album in person, there’s always their CD Release Party on Friday, April 15th at the Middle East Downstairs! They’ll be sharing the stage with the mighty Dopapod, as well as Insigniya, Trailer 4, and a special appearance by T-Buck of Deadfish fame. DDO will also be working with local non-profit Strangers Helping Strangers, so bring some canned goods down for the cause! Don’t sleep on grabbing tickets though, this show is almost certain to sell out so either get your tickets in advance here or make sure to show up at the ME nice and early!
Friday, April 15th – Middle East Downstairs
Doors at 7pm / 18+
