PGB Success! $1500 Raised for Japan Relief at the Playground Boston Benefit for the Victims of the Crisis in Japan at The Rosebud, 6/10

On a night where the Bruins were caught up in a dogfight with Vancouver in contention for the Stanley Cup, and countless other great shows with amazing lineups were happening all over town, The Rosebud was packed to the rafters for Playground Boston’s Japan Benefit show. A thunderous lineup of local hard rock royalty, coupled with a mind-blowing raffle featuring thousands in prizes, ensured that local music aficionados came out in droves to rock out for a very noble cause.
This entire year has been rife with natural disasters throughout the world. Since the Tohoku earthquake triggered a tsunami that ravaged the shores of Eastern Japan, there have been countless other earthquakes and floods all over the planet, not to mention a rash of deadly tornadoes that have savaged people closer to home. Every one of these disasters requires humankind to band together to provide assistance for the afflicted. But with new disasters happening seemingly every week, it can be easy to overlook the fact that even after an immediate outpouring of donations, the initial efforts are only the beginning of a long, arduous, and extremely expensive return to normal life for the victimized regions. The recent plight of the Japanese has been called the most expensive natural disaster of all time, and even after millions in aid they still have quite a ways to go to get back to the way things were.
Though $1500 may not seem like a large amount in the grand scheme of things, we instead look at it as an incredible exercise in generosity from a collection of people who might not have been in a position to donate such a sum to the people on the other side of the planet who really need it. We salute each and every person involved in this effort, from the bands, to the volunteers, to the venue, to the sponsors… but most of all to you, the fans, who made it possible for us to present The Japan Society with our contribution and do our part for our fellow man.
And it just so happened in raising these funds we had ourselves an incredible show! In case you missed it, here’s a recap of how things went…
The ‘Bud had already packed up by the time the first band took the stage. Cocked n Loaded had to compete against a very tight B’s game for the crowd’s attention, but the their booze-soaked AC/DC-meets-Guns-n-Roses-meets-a-dive-bar-bathroom-floor brand of rock proved to be more than up for the challenge. Cocked n Loaded got heads knocking and fists pumping throughout the entire venue, and all hell broke loose when they ended their set with an adrenaline-fueled cover of GnR’s “Night Train”… with every last person in the bar singing along to every last word!
Phantom Glue kept the night going strong by slamming some serious metal down on the table. The band terrified the masses with sludgy doom, beating on their instruments like souls possessed to produce a sound as invigorating as it was intimidating. Crunchy in every sense of the word, the ‘Glue may very well be the loudest band to ever play the friendly confines of The Rosebud!
Black Thai tore into their set with a vengeance – just your everyday run-of-the-mill mind-blowings and face-meltings – wreaking havoc on the very infrastructure of the building itself! Exultant riffs and cannonfire rhythm fueled this heavy and bearded and heavily bearded attack, leaving the entire crowd in awe of what they had just witnessed. The band was so loud, hard, and heavy that the club couldn’t take it, and some unfortunate technical difficulties crept into their set. The faithful crowd was unfazed though, and their patience was rewarded when Black Thai drummer Jeremy Hemond came through to save the day by ripping off furious drum solos to cover the silence while the club got their circuitry back up and running.
Longtime PGB Favorites Gozu closed out the night to a crowd that was still quite numerous, despite being depleted in the aftermath of the B’s heartbreaking defeat. (which, it just so happens, was the LAST time they suffered a loss in the series! yeah. that’s right. we got the cup.) Gozu blew the crowd away with Cornell-ian vocals and Buckethead-ian guitar solos. (to be fair, guitarist Doug Sherman isn’t quite on Bucket’s level yet (who is?), but he’s got the style right, and perhaps with a few more years of practice, a killswitch, a finger-extending surgical procedure and a trip to KFC for a costume he’ll get there). Without question, once again the highlight of Gozu’s set was their final song, “Alone,” a fuzzed-out monster balled of monstrous proportions.
THANK YOU!…
- To Gozu guitarist Doug Sherman, for working tirelessly alongside the PGB staff to make this even happen. None of this, NONE of this, would have been possible without him.
- To the bands. Words can’t describe how much it means to everyone at PGB that you were willing to donate your talents to helping us raise money for a cause we all believe in. We couldn’t possibly have asked for a better lineup of local rock talent!

Check out the PGB TOTW Sampler at playgroundboston.bandcamp.com - all proceeds go to The Japan Society! (Artwork by Alexander von Wieding)
- To Tracy, Stella, KC, and Ramon – our incredible raffle volunteers, who made everything go off without a hitch and enable our raffle to be so wildly successful! Tracy and Stella also worked long hours on getting the PGB Track Of The Week Sampler ready, and came to the rescue countless times throughout the entire preparatory process for the show!
- To Amy and Josh at the Rosebud for donating their room, their time, their energy, their beer slingin’, and their TIPS to our cause! Thanks for everything you do to support local music in this city, and for your help in raising this money!
- To the lovely ladies of the Boston League Of Women Wrestlers, for getting all dressed up and haranguing every last guest at the show into buying tons and tons of raffle tickets. BLOWW was responsible for raising a LOT of money for our cause, more than we ever would have been able to manage ourselves!
- To Alexander von Wieding for creating the iconic graphic for the flyer, posters, and T-shirts.
- To Shawn and Kevin at AudioCotton.com, for printing the awesome T-shirts that helped us raise even more money for Japan! T-shirts are still available – including the Limited-Edition black shirts – at AudioCotton.com! (And yes, they will continue to donate a portion of their proceeds to The Japan Society!)
- To Rueben & Bill at Chameleon, Gemma at Secret Society, and the whole staff over at Stingray for donating their time and efforts to the raffle – the tattoo gift certificates were one of the biggest hits!
- To Zac at Narragansett for his donated ‘Gansett prize packs, as well as his endless generosity and support of the local music community within the city. And hey – we take care of our own – the loyal patrons in the crowd that evening made sure the Rosebud was completely sold out of ‘Gansett by 11pm!
- To Andrew at Live Nation for making one person VERY happy and about 100 others VERY jealous with his donation of a pair of Dinosaur Jr./Henry Rollins/OFF! tickets to the raffle!
- To Steve at Belmont Music for his extremely generous gift card donation! Check out Steve’s shop for all your music needs, and check out his band Descend Upon The Sane for all your metal needs!
- To Tim Bugbee & Nicole Tammaro for their phenomenal skills with a camera, all their past work with PGB, and their donations of some insanely good prints to the raffle!
- To the Born Of Fire guys for their raffle contributions, their help with promoting, and for being all-around solid guys and stalwart supporters of Boston metal.
- To Mike at Stache Media for the Sony Prize Packs, the sweet vinyl (the Motley Crue wax was awesome, but did everyone see that Steve Vai album artwork?!), and for being the best blerd in Boston.
- To Mike Coen at The Gaff, also the frontman for Boston rockers Midatlantic. Catch his new project, All Echoes Return, on Saturday 7/16 at the Middle East Upstairs… or head down to Moody Street in Waltham and check out the bar!
- To Mike Moxley, co-owner of Canary Square and Coda, for the raffle gift cards… we’re sorry to hear you’re leaving Allston, The Common Ground has certainly been a favorite over the years – you will be missed!
- To Phil Audino of Tasty Burger, a late but extremely welcome addition to the raffle – and thanks to Seth Cohen for setting the giveaway up! And on a serious note, thanks for that Lime Mint Slushie you’ve got on your menu – it blows my mind every time I have it!
- To Matthew D’Agostino of TD Bank on Winter Street in Downtown Crossing, for making such a sizeable contribution to our relief efforts. Matt’s donation was the largest from any single source out of all the donors!
- To Liz at Bukowski’s in Inman Square – for the gift certificate to raffle off… and for the gallons upon gallons of beer and Fernet you’ve served us over the years!
- To the Eat At Jumbo’s guys – way to come through with a great raffle donation in the final hour! Aside from their contribution to our benefit, these guys do some great things for the community – check out their website for more info!
- To The Boston Globe, The Phoenix, Ryan’s Smashing Life, Boston Band Crush, The Deli Magazine – New England, The Soda Shop, Exploding In Sound, Post Somerville, and all the other local press outlets kind enough to spread the word about our benefit to their readership!
- To you, the fans of local music and friends of PGB. Thank you so much for coming out, supporting your local music scene like you have so many times before and will so many times again, and helping us raise a large sum of money for our brothers and sisters on the other side of the world – we only hope you had as great a time as we did in making this whole night happen!

The 8th Annual Rock The Village Music & Style Show blew the roof off of the Brighton Music Hall thanks to some funked-out local bands and some fierce local styles. The night featured the latest fashions from Allston merchants like Stingray Body Art, Orchard Skate Shop, Green Side Up Gallery, Buffalo Exchange, and more! The fashion show itself was sandwiched between incredible sets by The Force and The Few, with pop-rockers Bonfire Bandit opening up the night.
Check out these amazing photos from fellow Allstonian JustBill, and for a little bonus we’ve included video from The Few’s set, featuring their brand new song “Push You Down!”

Show Review & Photo Gallery: Come Reunion at TraniWrock – Club Oberon 4/14
by Tim B. on May.03, 2011, under Live Shows, Media, News, Photos, Reviews, Video

Come's Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw, performing live with TraniWreck at Club Oberon. Photo Credit: Tim Bugbee
Now in its seventh year, TraniWreck, the brainchild of Aliza Shapiro (aka Heywood Wakefield) combines many facets of LBGT culture and entertainment for an experience that is ribald, kitschy, and just plain fun. In their own words, ”TraniWreck is the legendary, award-winning, cabaret variety show featuring genderbending irreverence: Drag, Burlesque, Aerials and Performance Art. Since 2004, TraniWreck has been the home of brilliantly revealing costumes, inconceivably long nails, facial hair of astronomic proportions, gold lamé, debauchery and more attitude than a $13 cocktail” – and that’s 100% accurate. TraniWreck’s “TraniWrock” event at Club Oberon alternated between freewheeling cabaret, stand-up comedy, campy skits, and daring aerial maneuvering – the show was packed with excitement! The evening also included Teenbeat’s Cotton Candy (label honcho and ex-Unrest founder Mark Robinson, and ex-Blast Off Country Style singer Evelyn Hurley) to provide some mutated jingles to cover costume changeovers.

Once the parade of glitter, latex, fishnet and lycra was over, it was time for the return of Come. For those not in the know, Come was an amazingly powerful band during their reign in the ’90s, and for my money, hands-down the best Boston band I’ve ever heard! They did a two-date world tour last year (a warmup gig at TT’s the week before Matador’s 21st ‘Lost Weekend‘ anniversary blowout in Vegas), and tonight would be the first of another two-parter (they played in Brooklyn on Saturday, along with Eleventh Dream Day). The bristling, spiky, blues-soaked dual guitar attack of Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw remained intact, and original rhythm section Sean O’Brien and Arthur Johnson just crackled with power and precision. I can’t really think of another band that can meld two distinct guitar sounds so well; certainly they are up there in the pantheon of greats like Television, Thin White Rope, and The Church (though sounding wildly different from any of those).
Sticking with early material, (aside from the scintillating “Cimmaron” when Michael David Curry joined in with violin,) the set list didn’t vary too much from last year’s show, except that it was a bit shorter. While I would have loved to hear even more of their second record, the sublimely brooding “German Song” and “String” were played, with the latter featuring the kind of guitar work that should be held up as an example nonpareil in regards to a two-guitar attack. Breathtaking stuff indeed, and the venue was filled with people gasping at their luck to hear it once again. I don’t expect to see Come play again in the near future, but I’m extremely grateful that I was able to see them again at the height of their prodigious powers not just once but thrice.
DISCLAIMER: Depending on your place of employment, these pictures might be considered to be Not Safe For Work. If you’re worried about it, just wait until you get home to check them out… but make sure to give them a look because this spectacle is not to be missed!

And the winner is… John Powhida International Airport! J-Po took the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble crown in the face of some serious competition thanks to innovative, tongue-in-cheek songwriting, and some serious chops laid down by each and every band member on the stage! These guys left the crowd in stitches – laughing uproariously and cheering wildly – every mind in TT’s a little more blown than it was when they entered the club.

We gotta give some serious love to OldJack and Spirit Kid for leaving it all on the stage and giving J-Po & crew a real run for their money! Throughout the entire Rumble OldJack left the crowd breathless, and the Finals were no exception. Us PGBers were shocked that the judges did not rule in favor of them, it’s a true testament to the quality of music in this city that a band this talented and inspirational finished a competition such as this as a runner-up. Spirit Kid put on a hell of a performance as well – they were perhaps the tightest band on the night, dangerously catchy poppitude indeed! Alas, preparation and hookiness alone are not the keys to victory – no matter how many butts they got shaking in the crowd they were unable to sway the judges in their favor.

We here at PGB would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Rumble Organizer Anngelle Wood for resurrecting such an amazing Boston music tradition out of the ashes of longtime Rumble sponsor WBCN‘s demise. Many thought after the much-loved alternative radio giant crumbled in the shadow of corporate reorganizing that the Rumble, a 30+ year tradition celebrating the best in local Boston bands, would fall by the wayside. Indeed, in 2010 we had no Rumble, further confirming popular opinion that the 31st rendition of this competition back in 2009 would be the last. However, thanks to the hard work chipped in by former ‘BCN DJ Anngelle Wood and her crack team of rumblers it was reborn, moved to beloved Cambridge den of sin TT The Bear’s, and achieved smashing success on each of the 9 nights! So a big congrats to J-Po, a big thanks to Anngelle, and here’s hoping for our Rumble to carry on for years to come!

In what might have been the biggest upset of the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble, Spirit Kid was awarded the judges vote on night #1 of the semi-finals, over a VERY talented field. Crowd response was clearly in favor of Sidewalk Driver and Mellow Bravo, and DNFMOMD put on a jaw-dropping angst-ridden set that blew minds throughout TT’s. Still, the judges chose the dark horse on this one – a choice that while surprising, was well deserved. Look for Spirit Kid to perform next Friday, 4/22, at the Rumble Finals alongside Friday’s semi-final winner John Powhida International Airport, wild card selection Old Jack, and special guests The Shods.

Congrats to Sidewalk Driver for their victory on the third night of the Preliminary Round of the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble! Ripping solos, more glitter and confetti than a teenage birthday party, and one of the most commanding and captivating voices in the city propelled the band to the winner’s circle over one of the toughest lineups in the entire competition! We’re happy to report Black Thai made the cut as the second Wild Card thanks to a furious, thunderous, clamorous, beardulous set that left the capacity crowd stunned and speechless! Both bands advance to the Semi-Finals happening this Thursday and Friday back at TT’s.

Congrats to Mellow Bravo for their victory on the fourth night of the Preliminary Round of the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble! MB overcame amazing sets by the other three bands thanks to fierce onstage charisma, tight musicianship, and a raucous crowd screaming along to every word! Frontman Keith Pierce was a beast both on and off the stage – crowdsurfing while on the guitar, and even playing on the hood of a car parked outside! Gotta love the Acro-Brats ending the night too by inviting half the crowd onto the stage to sing along to their final song. (and for the Pills & Smoke cover too!)
