Spirit Kid's pop hooks wouldn't be considered 'badass' by any stretch of the imagination, but we think this is a pretty badass picture of frontman Emeen Zarookian. Photo Credit: Seth Drury

And the winner is… John Powhida International Airport! J-Po took the 2011 Rock & Roll Rumble crown in the face of some serious competition thanks to innovative, tongue-in-cheek songwriting, and some serious chops laid down by each and every band member on the stage! These guys left the crowd in stitches – laughing uproariously and cheering wildly – every mind in TT’s a little more blown than it was when they entered the club.

We gotta give some serious love to OldJack and Spirit Kid for leaving it all on the stage and giving J-Po & crew a real run for their money! Throughout the entire Rumble OldJack left the crowd breathless, and the Finals were no exception.  Us PGBers were shocked that the judges did not rule in favor of them, it’s a true testament to the quality of music in this city that a band this talented and inspirational finished a competition such as this as a runner-up. Spirit Kid put on a hell of a performance as well – they were perhaps the tightest band on the night, dangerously catchy poppitude indeed! Alas, preparation and hookiness alone are not the keys to victory – no matter how many butts they got shaking in the crowd they were unable to sway the judges in their favor.

We here at PGB would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Rumble Organizer Anngelle Wood for resurrecting such an amazing Boston music tradition out of the ashes of longtime Rumble sponsor WBCN‘s demise. Many thought after the much-loved alternative radio giant crumbled in the shadow of corporate reorganizing that the Rumble, a 30+ year tradition celebrating the best in local Boston bands, would fall by the wayside. Indeed, in 2010 we had no Rumble, further confirming popular opinion that the 31st rendition of this competition back in 2009 would be the last. However, thanks to the hard work chipped in by former ‘BCN DJ Anngelle Wood and her crack team of rumblers it was reborn, moved to beloved Cambridge den of sin TT The Bear’s, and achieved smashing success on each of the 9 nights! So a big congrats to J-Po, a big thanks to Anngelle, and here’s hoping for our Rumble to carry on for years to come!
